‘ginseng(진생)’은 한자표기 ‘人蔘’의’ 일본식 발음

최근 정부 우리의 소리음 ‘인삼(INSAM)’널리 홍보

‘인삼(人蔘)’은 오갈피나무과(科) 인삼속(人蔘屬) 식물을 말한다. 여러 해 살이 풀로 그 형태가 사람의 모양 또는 한자 사람 ‘人’자와 흡사해 인삼이라 부르며 순우리말은 ‘심’이다.

서양식 학명은 ‘Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer’ 로 1843년 러시아의 칼 안톤 본 메이어가 고려인삼의 학명을 발표한 이후 지금까지 통용되고 있다. 학명의 Panax는 ‘Pan(모든, 總, 汎: all)’과 ‘Axos(치료: cure)’의 복합어로 ‘만병통치의 약물’이란 의미이며, ‘ginseng’은 한자표기 ‘人蔘’을 일본식 발음 ‘진생’으로 그대로 사용한 것이다.

최근 정부도 이 때문에 우리의 소리음인 ‘인삼(INSAM)’으로 표기해 널리 홍보하고 외국삼과의 차별화를 시도하고 있는 만큼 영문으로 인삼을 표기할 때 ‘Ginseng’ 대신 ‘Insam’으로 표기하도록 하고 있다.

▲ 인삼의 어원 (The Origin of the Word Insam)

인삼의 어원은 사물의 중심, 힘, 핵심을 나타내는 우리 고유어 ‘심’에서 비롯됐다. 중국 문헌에서 ‘삼(蔘)’이라 표기한 것도 발음이 [siэm]에 해당하는 한자를 써야했기 때문인 것으로 추정하고 있다.

우리나라의 대표적 의학서인 ‘동의보감(東醫寶鑑)’에서도 인삼(人蔘) 바로 아래에 한글로 ‘심’이라고 표기하고 있다.

어원이 우리 고유어이며 자생지가 한반도와 만주 일대인 점을 감안할 때 인삼의 기원은 우리나라에서 찾아야 한다고 할 수 있다.

The word Insam originates from the Korean word ‘sim’ meaning the core of things. Insam was introduced in China as ‘sam(蔘)’ a Chinese character that best reflects the Chinese pronunciation of the Korean word, [siэm].

Dongui Bogam, the most representative encyclopedic medical book published in ancient Korea, added the letter ‘sim’ right below the word Insam.

Given the fact that the word Insam originates from a Korean word and the natural habitat is the Korean peninsula and Manchuria, Insam originates from Korea.

▲ 생육환경에 따른 삼의 종류 (The Kinds of Insam)

삼은 키우는 장소와 방법에 따라 산삼, 산양삼(장뇌삼), 인삼(재배삼) 등으로 명칭을 달리 하기도 하지만 모든 삼은 분류학적으로는 같은 삼이다. 그러나 생육 환경과 파종 방식 및 가공의 정도에 따라 다르게 구별한다.

자연 상태에서 자란 산삼은 그 종류와 생육 연수를 전문가들도 구분하기 어려운 반면, 인삼은 채종 및 배양근 관리 등 재배의 모든 과정이 명확하게 관리되고 있어 보다 믿을 수 있는 품질을 보장한다.

Insam is referred to differently depending on the location and method of its cultivation like wild Insam, wood-cultivated Insam and Insam. However, they are all are Insam in terms of taxology. Insam is also classified depending on the cultivation environment and sowing and processing methods.

It is hard to tell the age of Wild Insam. Experts are no exception. On the contrary, cultivated Insam is precisely logged from seed production to root management.
